On location or at our Edinburgh based studio

The full day workshop gives you the skills, knowledge and confidence to work in a team to produce a short film.

Course is open to any age group, however it is ideally suited to groups of young people from 12 to 25.

Group sizes: 4 – 8 people (ideally 6).

Course outline

The day starts with an overview of the camera and sound equipment and it’s operation.

We then cover scripting, storyboarding and directing a scene.

The group then shoots a couple of scenes, with each taking turns with production roles of; director, camera operator, sound recordist, assistant director and 2 actors.

In the afternoon the group then have the opportunity to come up with an original idea for a short film and set out to shoot it.

The raw footage is viewed at the end of the workshop and an edited version will be sent on DVD for them to keep.

Course outcomes

This introductory course will equip participants with a good understanding of the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking.

Team working is a strong element of filmmaking. As participants are doing something fun and creative, even people that tend to be shy normally are happy to engage.

The course encourages personal development and confidence building. The team produce a short film by the end of the day, which is edited by the tutor and provided on DVD.

About the tutor.

Ben McNeill studied engineering before switching to the more creative career of freelance photographer and a little later, video camera operator.

Ben’s first project was a dual role with the Prince’s Trust where he was well and truly thrown into the deep end with their European program. He was tasked as an assistant team leader with a group of young people from Glasgow, working on a community project with kids in Poland. His second role was to single handedly produce a Documentary of the program.

Since then Ben has worked on a wide range of projects including, live music production with Channel 4, promotional videos and recently Internet Television.

Ben is actively involved with fundraising for the Prince’s Trust and is committed to youth development.
